Chapter 16

One of the interns had curled up under his desk around two a.m. and was lightly snoring. Lin cast an envious look and noted it was Dax. Staring at her computer screen for hours on end left her eyes gritty and dry. She pushed her chair away from her desk, stood and stretched her arms high above her head before bending over and setting both palms on the floor.

“Want to call it a night?” Rimmer moved into the space behind her. Even looking at him upside down, his eyes were red-rimmed and tired.

Lin unrolled her body slowly upwards and perched on the edge of her desk. “Might be wise. I read that last paragraph three times and barely took in a word.”

Rimmer raised his voice. “Okay, everyone, let’s call it a night and be back here at nine o’clock.”

“Make it ten, Rimmer?”

He glanced at her, picked up on her unspoken message, and looked back at their young team. “Ten o’clock. Good work tonight.”

Someone toed the sleeping intern who startled awake, sat up and hit his head on his desk. “Come on, Dax. Time to go home and keep sleeping.”

Dax looked sheepish as he stood and rubbed his head, and the group quickly dispersed, except for Wendy.

She approached Paul with a neatly clipped set of printed pages in her hands. “Thank you for giving me responsibility for the team today. While you were out I cross-referenced all sightings of Chan with his known businesses and ran a deep analysis of all known family and associates. That first residential property you mentioned— It was bought by Chan’s second cousin by marriage in the name of a shelf company. And there’s a copy of upgrades made to the security system three months ago.”

Closer to Wendy than Rimmer, Lin held her hand out and took the printed pages. “Thanks.” She glanced at the top page and passed it to Rimmer.

He looked briefly at the page and nodded. “Good work, Wendy. We’ll work this into our operational plan tomorrow—later today.”

Wendy gripped the strap of her shoulder bag and backed away. “Just so you know, Dax was in here working at seven yesterday morning. He’s a good guy and a hard worker.”

“And you know this because—”

Wendy pushed her glasses up her nose and met Lin’s gaze. “I was here too.”

“Dedication to your work is commendable, Wendy, but I don’t want to see you in here before ten tomorrow, got it?” Rimmer folded his arms and tried to look stern, but Lin could see the slight tug at the corner of his mouth. He was impressed by Wendy, both the quality of her work and her work ethic.

“Understood, sir. Good night—um, morning.” She blinked before hurrying through the door and closing it behind her.

Rimmer rubbed both hands across his face. “Come on, Lin. I’ll drop you off at home.”

Lin’s lips twitched before she gave up the attempt and grinned at him. “You forget we rode Minnie here because your car stinks. How about I take you home with me?”

Rimmer’s hands stopped their movement.
